Cham­pi­onships win­ner sets new world record

POW­ER­LIFTER Ian Dou­glas, of Ash­ford’s Olympians Gym, set a new world record on his way to winning the 82.5kg over-60s ti­tle at the BPC UK Open Cham­pi­onships in South Ruis­lip on Satur­day.

The record was set in the dead lift, with Dou­glas adding 20kg on to the pre­vi­ous record of 250kg, which had been held by an Amer­i­can lifter since 1993.

Ian is a lo­cal leg­end in pow­er­lift­ing cir­cles hav­ing run the Rail­way Gym at New­town for many years un­til forced to close by re­de­vel­op­ers this year.

Olympians’ Dar­ren Crouch took gold in the all Eng­land cham­pi­onships winning the Un­der-16 class in the 67.5 weight cat­e­gory.

Dar­ren recorded a 160kg squat, 97.5kg bench press and a fine dead lift of 190kgs in a trio of per­sonal bests to fin­ish with a splen­did 447.5kgs.
