Championships winner sets new world record
POWERLIFTER Ian Douglas, of Ashford’s Olympians Gym, set a new world record on his way to winning the 82.5kg over-60s title at the BPC UK Open Championships in South Ruislip on Saturday.
The record was set in the dead lift, with Douglas adding 20kg on to the previous record of 250kg, which had been held by an American lifter since 1993.
Ian is a local legend in powerlifting circles having run the Railway Gym at Newtown for many years until forced to close by redevelopers this year.
Olympians’ Darren Crouch took gold in the all England championships winning the Under-16 class in the 67.5 weight category.
Darren recorded a 160kg squat, 97.5kg bench press and a fine dead lift of 190kgs in a trio of personal bests to finish with a splendid 447.5kgs.
