Wheeler fin­ishes a fine third

FOLKE­STONE Run­ning Club’s for­mer Ash­ford AC run­ner He­len Wheeler is en­joy­ing her re­turn to racing, tak­ing a su­perb third place in the Kent League meet­ing at Cap­stone Park, Chatham. He­len clocked a fine 21:01 over the 5km course and there was also a splen­did run by Ash­ford’s Ja­nine Brown in sixth with 21:34. Hon­ours went to Dei­dre McDer­mot from Ton­bridge with 19:47 from M&M’s Helcha Pen­fold with 20:23. Ash­ford were fifth team with Les­ley Hall 26th with 24:16, Briony Walsh 35th with 25: 21 and Chris­tine King clock­ing 30:36. Folke­stone were ninth with Sue Mitchell 29th in 24:26 and Tina Eke 55th with 29:33. Grace Ni­cholls was de­nied a fine sec­ond place in the U20 women by a mar­shalling er­ror that sent her off on the wrong path while chas­ing leader Beth Carter who won con­vinc­ingly in 14:47. Grace had to set­tle for third with 15:52 with Iso­bel Dick­in­son 22nd in 21:25. Kelsey Howard led the U15 team to third with a splen­did sev­enth place in 14:12 over the 3k course. Amelia Jones was 11th with 14: 40 and Kate Fun­nell 22nd in 15:56. Best of the U13 girls was Katherine Buck­ley in 14th with 13: 25 over 2.5km with Katie Lillington 26th in 14:36 and Me­gan Milling­ton 32nd in 15: 42.

In the men’s race Folke­stone RC were a fine fifth team led home by Sam Rigby in 15th over the 10k course with 33:24. With four to score he was sup­ported by David Weekes in 30th with 35:44, Gavin Finch 58th with 38:38 and Louis Fearn 81st in 40:45. Gra­hame Eke was 120th with 47:12. Ash­ford AC’s best was Pete Walsh in 73rd with 40:02 and Ian King 78th in 40:22 while Ash­ford and District RR had three fin­ish­ers in Wayne Val­las 41:09, Gary Sage 43:06 and Ed­die Rodger 46:04. The ju­nior men ran 5k with Rob Den­nis an ex­cel­lent fourth with 19:10 with team-mate Richard Dag­ger eighth in 19:35. In the U17s War­ren Uden was 18th with 20:31 with An­drew Robert­son just be­hind in 20:48 and Jonathan Hobbs, bet­ter known as a race walker, clock­ing 21:12. Max Ni­cholls was a splen­did sec­ond in the U13 boys’, clock­ing 12:50 for 3k, and Pa­trick Dun­can flew the flag for Ash­ford in the U15s, 24th with a time of 18:07.
