Legion calls in the big guns to aid fund-raising
AN ARMOURED car will make an appearance in Ashford town centre to raise money for this year’s Poppy Appeal. The three-and-a-half ton Daimler Ferret, an armoured reconnaissance vehicle, will appear next to the bandstand on Saturday, November 8. Mike Hornard, chairman of the Ashford branch of the Royal British Legion, has organised the event. He served for 12 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and for six in the Territorial Army. Mr Hornard said: “Within the local branch we felt that the Poppy Appeal this year needed something a little different. “We want to boost our welfare work as much as we can, and hopefully this will achieve that aim.” The Ashford branch of the RBL is ranked first in the country for its welfare work helping ex-servicemen and women in hard times.
