Social history through the camera lens
OUR pictures from the past this week record happy summer rural fun half a century ago. Village fetes and functions were in full swing in the villages around Ashford as the county basked in sunshine. Most of the children wearing fancy dress featured in the August Little Chart fete photograph would be pensioners now, while the line-up for the old folks party in the gardens of The Wheelers at Brabourne the same month will only be remembered as long gone family and friends. The final picture from the 1958 collection was taken at the annual St Mary-in-the-Marsh fete. All were taken by Ashford photographic bothers George and Douglas Weaver and are kept in the archives of Reflections: Images Past and Present. They hold the copyright but prints can be ordered by contacting Sue Gambrill on 01752 851126.
