FIFTY years of marriage were celebrated by an Ashford couple and 29 of their closest friends and family on Sunday.

The New Chimneys in Godinton Park resounded to toasts for the golden wedding anniversary of Peter and Pat Buckthorp.

Mr Buckthorp, 73, from Askes Court, Singleton said: “It was a lovely do put on by our two daughters Gill and Claire. It went absolutely brilliantly.”

The couple first met on a blind date in 1954 while Peter was still in the RAF.

Mr Buckthorp said: “At first we didn’t like each other, but we developed a habit of meeting up and in time it became love.”

After courting for four years they married on October 25, 1958 in Wimbledon, before moving to Ashford in 1966, where they have lived ever since.

Mr Buckthorp said: “In some ways it’s a long time, but in many ways it’s a short time.

“Like everyone we’ve had our ups and downs, but the love is still there and I can’t imagine life without her.”
