Elford error so costly
TOWN’S winless streak hit six matches as they slumped to defeat at play-off chasing Merstham on Tuesday.
An evenly-fought game was decided when a horrific error by Jimmy Elford allowed Kwabena Agyei to slide home the winner just past the hour mark.
On a freezing night, Merstham were soon piling forward and after just two minutes, Kevin Locke lifted an effort over.
Moments later, home left-back Joe Hill had a cross-shot deflected wide but as Town started to settle, Ryan Briggs shot wide from 30 yards.
The recalled Danny Lye looked at his tenacious best in the first-half and on 20 minutes, drove toward goal before firing straight at keeper Ian Chatfield.
The only other chance of an otherwise dour first half fell to the home side as Agyei outpaced Sean Ray only to shoot wide.
Town played with plenty of endeavour in the second half but lacked creativity.
Paul Jones shot over and then found the side-netting after team-mate Lye had been unlucky to see his header drift wide before Merstham hit Town with a sucker punch.
In trying to pass the ball across the face of goal, Elford succeeded in picking out Agyei, who made no mistake from 12-yards.
Merstham striker Locke then smashed a powerful drive against the bar and while Claude Seanla and Craig Wilkins both had late openings the home side held out for victory.
