Off pitch problems start to take toll
FALSE DAWN: Invicta slip to defeat after new skipper Dryden opens scoring
WITH their off-field problems an ongoing concern, the fall-out has also begun to effect Invicta’s on-field display as they lost at Cray on Tuesday night.
Following the departure of four defenders in the past week, including skipper Lee Gledhill, Jimmy Dryden took over as captain and scored the opening goal.
However, the home side fought back to take the three points and draw level with Invicta on 24 points of Ryman League Division 1 South.
With James Everitt and Matt Bourne suspended, Cugley was forced into five changes, with teenagers Josh Burchell and Josh Vincent making their first senior starts and returning loanee Frankie Chappell taking his place in the middle of defence alongside Scott Lindsey and another loan signing, Gillingham’s Tayler Thomas.
Despite the changes, Invicta started the brighter, and after Vincent hit the side netting in the sixth minute, Dryden headed home a Jimmy Jackson cross to put the visitors ahead.
The sides traded chances through Dryden and Whitnell, before Whitnell pounced to equalise for Cray.
Michael Everitt was then guilty of giving the ball away as Cray went 2-1 ahead. The midfielder’s pass to Burchell was intercepted by Kempster, who took advantage by firing past Mitten.
At the start of the second half, Burchell went close for Invicta and Colin Luckett shot wide for Cray, before Whitnell added to the home team’s lead by taking advantage of a scramble inside the Invicta area.
A bad night was completed when Invicta lost midfielder James Corbett through injury.
