YOUNG ath­letes from the Ash­ford AC Julie Rose Academy have been en­joy­ing suc­cess in re­cent com­pe­ti­tions. The academy, for school chil­dren in Years 5 and 6, com­peted in Kent in­door sports hall events at Folke­stone and Ton­bridge, against 24 clubs from all over Kent. Youngsters took part in four ath­letic dis­ci­plines and the Ash­ford team fin­ished first at Folke­stone and joint first at Ton­bridge. As a re­sult of those im­pres­sive per­for­mances, 12 mem­bers of the academy have been se­lected for tri­als to rep­re­sent Kent at an in­ter-coun­ties cham­pi­onship at Burgess Hill in Sus­sex in Jan­uary. The 12 are: Ben Phillips, Ben Isaac, Ge­orge Hog­ben, Emem Umoh, Chelsea God­ley, Clara Ewart, Emma Phillips, Char­lotte Tap­pen­den, Cameron Hastie, So­phie Pin­ney, Ed­ward Miller and Te­gan White. Academy coach Jac­qui Snare said: “We have a good coach­ing struc­ture, with the em­pha­sis on de­vel­op­ing the young ath­letes through their in­di­vid­ual skills, and mak­ing it pos­si­ble for them to progress to Ash­ford Ath­letic Club as an un­der-13 ath­lete. “Many of our youngsters have been with us since start­ing ath­let­ics at four years of age and have pro­gressed from the Julie Rose Ju­niors.”
