Julie Rose youngsters excel
YOUNG athletes from the Ashford AC Julie Rose Academy have been enjoying success in recent competitions. The academy, for school children in Years 5 and 6, competed in Kent indoor sports hall events at Folkestone and Tonbridge, against 24 clubs from all over Kent. Youngsters took part in four athletic disciplines and the Ashford team finished first at Folkestone and joint first at Tonbridge. As a result of those impressive performances, 12 members of the academy have been selected for trials to represent Kent at an inter-counties championship at Burgess Hill in Sussex in January. The 12 are: Ben Phillips, Ben Isaac, George Hogben, Emem Umoh, Chelsea Godley, Clara Ewart, Emma Phillips, Charlotte Tappenden, Cameron Hastie, Sophie Pinney, Edward Miller and Tegan White. Academy coach Jacqui Snare said: “We have a good coaching structure, with the emphasis on developing the young athletes through their individual skills, and making it possible for them to progress to Ashford Athletic Club as an under-13 athlete. “Many of our youngsters have been with us since starting athletics at four years of age and have progressed from the Julie Rose Juniors.”
