IT WAS the third time in five years that the Co-operative store in Wye had been targeted by ram-raiders. Bollards and a flower bed placed in front of the shop were not enough to block the raiders from ramming the window, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to the shop and stock. Staff worked hard to clean up the damage and reopen the shop. Almost two years ago, in January 2007, ram-raiders caused £3,000 of damage. Thieves driving two stolen 4x4 vehicles managed to steal the cash point during that raid. The store was also targeted in 2003 when thieves stole cigarettes and alcohol. After the 2003 ram-raid a flower bed was installed in front of the shop. A Co-operative spokesman said: “There is extensive damage to the Wye store including windows, shelving, refrigeration and stock. “Obviously this caused disruption to the store, which had to stay closed on Friday. “We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this has caused. “However, staff worked hard to reopen the store at 11am on Saturday. “CCTV footage of this most recent incident has been given to the police who are investigating and we would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.”
