THEVALINGHAM Thevakumar, who runs the food and wine store in Lyminge, had been doing some paperwork in his flat above the shop after closing on Thursday night. At 1am Mr Thevakumar was in his bedroom, which looks out on to the road, when he heard voices. Ten minutes later he heard vehicles slowing down and looked out of the window to see two Mitsubishi 4x4s. He started to get suspicious and told his wife he was concerned. Five minutes later he heard the vehicles again. One was behind his van, which was parked outside the shop, and the other was in the road. They rammed the shopkeeper’s van out of their way then reversed the 4x4s in front of the shop. Two men wearing balaclavas got out of the vehicles and smashed the shop window with a sledgehammer. Mr Thevakumar said: “I called 999 and shouted thief, thief. “There’s a street light in front of the shop and I got a clear view of the numberplate, which I read to the police” The raiders grabbed the sledgehammer and drove off in the direction of Elham. The shop owners spent much of the night clearing up and were open for business as usual the following morning. Mr Thevakumar, who has run the shop for the past two years, said: “I didn’t expect this to happen here as Lyminge is a nice, quiet village.”
