LIV­ING in Kent, I can eas­ily see trucks of a dozen na­tion­al­i­ties in a few min­utes on our mo­tor­ways and how we wel­come them with an ar­chaic vo­cab­u­lary seem­ingly de­signed to add to their con­fu­sion. To­day I added “dis­con­tin­u­ous hard shoul­der” to my list (M25 Dart­ford). “Switch off when idling” does noth­ing to help con­cen­tra­tion, but my favourite was for many years the first ad­mo­ni­tion to greet the for­eign driver leav­ing
