Friend­ship led to 50 years of mar­riage

A COU­PLE who have cel­e­brated their golden wed­ding an­niver­sary say they are best friends. Fred­er­ick and Phyl­lis New­man, of Pope House, Farm Lane, Ten­ter­den, toasted their 50th an­niver­sary on Satur­day De­cem­ber 13. Mr New­man met his wife, his best friend’s sis­ter, while serv­ing in the Royal Navy. The cou­ple mar­ried at Lyminge church on De­cem­ber 13, 1958, be­fore mov­ing to Aus­tralia, as part of Mr New­man’s naval duty. They even­tu­ally re­turned to this coun­try and Mr New­man, who worked for the Pru­den­tial, re­tired to Ten­ter­den with his wife 14 years ago. They have two daugh­ters, Tracy and Dawn, and one son, Derek, as well as seven grand­chil­dren and three great­grand­chil­dren. Mr New­man spent much of his child­hood in Rol­ven­den and Mrs New­man comes from Lyminge. Mr New­man said: “We are best friends, very com­pat­i­ble and we have sim­i­lar in­ter­ests.”
