Tragedy as man is struck by train
TRANSPORT police are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a train.
The 56-year-old was hit by the 12.57pm Ramsgate to Ashford service at Smeeth on Monday and British Transport Police were called just after 2pm.
A spokesman said: “The incident is being treated as non-suspicious.
“British Transport Police (BTP) officers attended, alongside paramedics from the local ambulance service.”
The line was closed while the transport police dealt with the incident before being handed back to Network Rail at 3.35pm.
The victim has yet to be identified and transport police said they were preparing a file for the coroner.
Ashford coroner’s officer Bryan Hale said the post mortem examination was due to take place yesterday (Wednesday) although the date of the inquest opening is still to be fixed.
A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Services said: “One ambulance was sent out and one person was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.”
