Tragedy as man is struck by train

TRANS­PORT po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the death of a man who was struck by a train.

The 56-year-old was hit by the 12.57pm Rams­gate to Ash­ford ser­vice at Smeeth on Mon­day and Bri­tish Trans­port Po­lice were called just af­ter 2pm.

A spokesman said: “The in­ci­dent is be­ing treated as non-sus­pi­cious.

“Bri­tish Trans­port Po­lice (BTP) of­fi­cers at­tended, along­side paramedics from the lo­cal am­bu­lance ser­vice.”

The line was closed while the trans­port po­lice dealt with the in­ci­dent be­fore be­ing handed back to Net­work Rail at 3.35pm.

The vic­tim has yet to be iden­ti­fied and trans­port po­lice said they were pre­par­ing a file for the coroner.

Ash­ford coroner’s of­fi­cer Bryan Hale said the post mortem ex­am­i­na­tion was due to take place yes­ter­day (Wed­nes­day) al­though the date of the in­quest open­ing is still to be fixed.

A spokesman for South East Coast Am­bu­lance Ser­vices said: “One am­bu­lance was sent out and one per­son was pro­nounced dead at the scene by paramedics.”
