Inspections for asbestos
TARGETED inspections to ensure companies are not exposing workers to potentially harmful asbestos fibres have been made at firms across Ashford. Health and Safety Executive inspectors, working in partnership with local authorities, have visited 112 companies across Kent, resulting in 28 asbestos-related improvement notices and one asbestos-related prohibition notice. While on site, inspectors also served six improvement notices relating to matters of evident concern. Twenty-three of the visits were to firms in Ashford. The aim of the campaign is to remind businesses of their responsibilities under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. Asbestos-related diseases are still the largest occupational killers in the UK with around 4,000 deaths per year (15 times the fatal accident rate).
