In­spec­tions for as­bestos

TAR­GETED in­spec­tions to en­sure com­pa­nies are not ex­pos­ing work­ers to po­ten­tially harm­ful as­bestos fi­bres have been made at firms across Ash­ford. Health and Safety Ex­ec­u­tive in­spec­tors, work­ing in part­ner­ship with lo­cal au­thor­i­ties, have vis­ited 112 com­pa­nies across Kent, re­sult­ing in 28 as­bestos-re­lated im­prove­ment no­tices and one as­bestos-re­lated pro­hi­bi­tion no­tice. While on site, in­spec­tors also served six im­prove­ment no­tices re­lat­ing to mat­ters of ev­i­dent con­cern. Twenty-three of the vis­its were to firms in Ash­ford. The aim of the cam­paign is to re­mind busi­nesses of their re­spon­si­bil­i­ties un­der the Con­trol of As­bestos Reg­u­la­tions 2006. As­bestos-re­lated dis­eases are still the largest oc­cu­pa­tional killers in the UK with around 4,000 deaths per year (15 times the fa­tal ac­ci­dent rate).
