Davey captures Masters gold
ASHFORD Athletics Club members Peter Davey, Steve Langford and Les Wood returned from the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley with one gold and three silver medals. Davey was the star of the show, grabbing gold in the 35 to 39-year-old high jump event with a leap of 1.65m. He also secured a silver in the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.04sec. Langford jumped 10.25m to claim silver in the 50 to 54-year-old triple jump and Wood was a silver medallist in the 60 to 64-yearold long jump, leaping 4.24m. The league season starts on April 27. Anyone interested in competing (over35s) can join training sessions at the Julie Rose Stadium on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7-8pm. ASHFORD & District Road Runners claimed the team prize at the Lydd Half-Marathon on Sunday. Robert Carpenter’s fifth-place finish (1hr 21min 42sec ), coupled with Wayne Vallas’ ninth position (1.23.35) and Jonathan Reeves’ good run (1.29.44) completed the victorious line-up. Steve Marshall (1.37.50) and Mick James (1:45.15) were the other club members to finish. As their preparation continues for the London Marathon in April, several members will be taking on the Hastings Half-Marathon on Sunday. Carpenter had previously finished 12th in the Thanet 20-Mile Road Race, posting a personal best time of 2.10.11. Jason Windle clocked 2.41.47 and Mick James 3.04.16. In the South Downs, Steve Hickman finished his 49th marathon in 4hrs40mins.
