heightened security risk, the police responded as you would expect them to.

“For years now we have been asking people not to leave luggage lying around – and it just goes to show just what happens and how it causes disruption in the town.”

The call alerting police to the left luggage was received at 3.10pm on Monday.

Officers guided people away from the bank.

Then at about 4.20pm a wider area was sealed off, from Boots to WH Smith, and most of Bank Street.

Shoppers watched as an Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion.

One witness at the Man of Kent pub said: “The bangs were really loud and caused all the birds to fly off.”

The roads around the High Street were closed until 5.45pm.

Police say they are not treating the incident as a hoax and are trying to trace the owner.
