MARGARETA Duggan could be forgiven for seeing double when an artist showed off his creative talents. Residents of Sandling Close, Stanhope, Ashford, were invited to a private viewing of artist Roy Smith’s photography exhibition – giving Margareta the chance to see his full-size portrait of herself. They were joined by councillors, stakeholders and representatives from the Chrysalis consortium who are responsible for the Stanhope’s £150 million regeneration. Roy’s exhibition, called Decant, comprises photographs and interviews with Sandling Close residents. Sandling Close, a block of 36 flats and maisonettes, is due to be demolished this year. Margareta, a Stanhope resident since 1976, said: “Stanhope is changing dramatically. It’s good that Roy has recorded our thoughts and feelings about our homes and community.” Roy said: “I have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and goodwill of the residents I have spoken to and it has been fascinating to share their stories and hopes for the future.”
