Leaders inflict heavy loss
AWAY DEFEAT: Ashford fail to get on the scoreboard as Kent 1’s champions elect turn the screw
ASHFORD were on the receiving end of a Medway backlash on Saturday, as they were hammered 58-0 by the Kent 1 leaders at Priestfields.
Against a team still reeling from a home defeat to Sittingbourne the week before, the visitors’ hopes of getting anything from the game vanished inside the opening 40 minutes as the champions-elect ran in six tries for a 34-0 lead at the half.
To their credit, Ashford came out fighting in the second half, led by captain John Norman, who with fellow forwards Joe Lakin and Owen Piper continued to battle. JJ and Liam Murray were also a threat from the back division, helped by the strong running of Peter Walsh.
They could have scored points, but rejected easy penalties in an attempt to claw back some of Medway’s lead via tries. This tactic didn’t result in a single point being scored, however, and the home side went on to register 24 secondhalf points, including four more tries.
This Saturday, Ashford travel to alreadyrelegated Sheppey.
