Make the ideal conditions count
THE good news about the strong south westerly winds is that they create the ideal conditions along most of the coast and the fish have been climbing the rod tops, especially cod, with lots of quality catches reported. The Grand Parade Open fished in horrendous weather saw world champion Joe Arch from Wales top score with 8.9kg, thanks to two cod plus whiting from a peg at the double slip along Princes Parade. Unlucky in the event was Folkestone’s Robert Harwood-Brown, who landed a 4kg cod only to find it was on lost tackle. In the Sheerness Steel Kent Classic Norfolk angler Dave Read beat nearly 400 rivals with a single bass of 1.25kg to win £2,000-plus. Michael Warne of Hythe won the Fountain SAC beach match totalling 5.63kg including two cod, the best weighing 2.8kg. Stephen Field of Lydd fishing Dungeness over low water reported two cod of 11lb 1oz plus two 5lb-plus, while Hythe angler Cieron Bull had one of 10lb. From the boats, Dave Robinson of Whitstable landed 20 cod aboard Fair Chance off Dungeness with a best of 17lb. Although the wind has turned north and it is colder, the sea will settle and darkness may be the best time to fish from the beaches. The latest Seabrook SAA Christmas match was won by Saltwood’s John Wells, who landed 22 fish including whiting and dogfish from Twiss Groyne. In the Folkestone SAA pier match, I topped the weights with 12 whiting on a stormy night for 2.93kg. The biggest fish was a 1.08kg codling for Matt Perry. Rowan Lee of Folkestone won the latest Martin Walters SAC match fishing the Mermaid rocks with 25 fish, mostly pouting and whiting, for 12lb 12oz. Coarse fishing has ground to a halt with the amount of cold water hitting the fisheries. The best bet is the commercial fisheries like Cottington at Deal where Lake Pepper continues to turn out the odd big carp with the best a 31lb 10oz mirror for Lee De Garsten from Margate.
