” A NEW-LOOK Ashford Tanners men’s handball team produced a good performance to defeat the University of Southampton 39-15 at the Stour Centre on Sunday. The Tanners, who led 19-7 at half-time, used the match as their first warm-up game ahead of their clash with French side Sotteville-Les-Rouen in February. Their player-coach, 19-year-old Etienne Ster, led the way by scoring seven goals from seven attempts, and every Tanners player except goalkeeper Steve Thompson got on the scoresheet. Southampton fielded an under-strength team with just seven players while Ashford fielded a strong squad with six players on the bench but the visitors still provided a good challenge for the newlyformed Ashford team. The Tanners had a number of European players but there were also seven Britishborn players in the team, a number of whom have come through from last year’s junior squad. Ashford’s scorers were: Nik Panovs 8, Etienne Ster 7, Tomas Kabelis 6, Arturs Koponans 4, Rob Edwards 3, Gareth Jenner 3, Adam Lally 2, Dan Birkin 2, James Gibson 1, David Jasiewicz 1, Florent 1, Etienne Szomonyak 1. The Tanners hold coaching sessions at the Stour Centre for all ages. For more details, see their website at www.ashfordhand
