Fixture decision imminent
HOME DERBY WITH ANCHORIANS POSTPONED AT ELEVENTH HOUR AFTER REFEREE FAILS TO TURN UP
ASHFORD Rugby Club say they are disappointed Saturday’s Kent 1 home game against Gillingham Anchorians was cancelled at the last minute following the non-arrival of the match referee.
Confusion surrounded his absence with the home side arranging for a Level Nine official attached to the club to take charge at short notice.
Anchs agreed to play a friendly, but refused to play the league match.
The matter is now in the hands of the London Division, who run Kent 1.
Secretary John Carley said: “I hope to make a decision before the end of the week. I am waiting for letters from the referee and Ashford, but I don’t think Gillingham Anchorians have done anything wrong at all.”
Ashford skipper Pete Walsh said: “I can understand Anchs’ feelings, but it’s just disappointing because we had invited 30 vice-presidents to a pre-match lunch.
“Our players were also upset we didn’t play, and there were a few choice words in the dressing room afterwards.”
The 2nds and 3rds’ matches were both called off due to waterlogged pitches, while the 4ths were also without a game as the opposition failed to raise a side.
Meanwhile the club’s under-14s formed a guard of honour for the Guinness Premiership match between Saracens and Bath.
Ashford also aim to organise a celebrity tag rugby match in March.
They hope to involve some big-name celebrities.
