Fast train ser­vice will be ‘enor­mous boost’ for the area

It was full steam ahead for the for­mal launch of the full high speed train ser­vice.

COM­MUTERS were greeted by the car­ni­val at­mos­phere of a jazz band play­ing at the for­mal launch of the full high-speed ser­vice from Ash­ford.

Pas­sen­gers catch­ing their trains at Ash­ford In­ter­na­tional Sta­tion early on Mon­day morn­ing were also treated to free cups of cof­fee and ba­con rolls

It was all part of the cel­e­bra­tion of the ar­rival of the long-awaited full 37-minute ser­vice from Lon­don to Ash­ford, slash­ing times from the pre­vi­ous 88 min­utes.

Ash­ford’s Fu­ture manag­ing di­rec­tor Ju­dith Ar­mitt said: “This is an enor­mous boost. It means that peo­ple can both eas­ily work in Lon­don and in­vest in Ash­ford. Peo­ple have been pleas­antly sur­prised as to how quickly the train trav­els.”

Ash­ford Bor­ough Coun­cil leader Cllr Paul Clokie (Con) said: “It is a real op­por­tu­nity for Ash­ford to go for­ward.”

Both boarded the 0913 train to Lon­don St Pan­cras along with other lead­ing bor­ough fig­ures such as coun­cil chief ex­ec­u­tive John Bun­nett.
