Christine delighted by surprise leaving party
FORMER staff, pupils and parents conspired to give a school’s business manager a surprise farewell party on her retirement.
Christine Gibbons has been at Pluckley primary school for 21 years and admits leaving this week will be a ‘real wrench’.
She started as a part-time secretary and was then school secretary before moving up to become the school’s business manager.
“Christine was more than just a secretary,” said Pluckley deputy head teacher Lindsay Roberts, “She was also involved in helping on school trips and then was a driving force in the school’s fundraising campaign.”
“She played a big part in our Raise the Roof campaign that raised £90,000 between 1993 and 2001 to fund the extension to the school.”
Christine, who lives in Charing, also volunteered to go out to Malawi in 2007 to help set up Pluckley’s connection with Chikwawa Primary School as part of the Starfish Malawi charity.
Her unstinting and tireless service to the school was honoured at the surprise party at the school last week.
A number of previous head teachers joined former staff and pupils to pay tribute to her efforts. There was even a skype link to France and a video message.
“It was a huge surprise,” said Christine, “I am still in shock. It was just so lovely that so many people made so much effort for me.”
She aims to continue her work with the school’s Malawi link.
