Mys­tery of tragic mum

A MAN ar­rested over the sus­pected mur­der of his wife was re­leased af­ter po­lice ac­cepted she had died ac­ci­den­tally, an in­quest heard.

But a coroner said there were still unan­swered ques­tions over the death of Mar­garet Penny, 40, who died af­ter fall­ing down stairs at her home in Ham­street on Jan­uary 25.

Det Ch Insp Michael Atkin­son told the hear­ing that there had been an ex­ten­sive in­ves­ti­ga­tion

He said: “There was no ev­i­dence that Mr Penny caused fa­tal in­juries to his wife.”

Record­ing an open ver­dict, coroner Rachel Red­man said: “I still feel I have some ques­tions that can­not be an­swered.”

Hus­band Paul Penny ex­plained that he had held her around the neck and shoul­ders to stop her fall but ended up tum­bling with her.
