Youth club team scores a victory in national contest
WE ARE the champions!
That’s the proud boast of these six lads from the XC Youth Centre in Stanhope Road, Ashford, who won the Clubs for Young People national tournament. Team “Random”, made up of captain Dan Cornell, Dan Morrison, Anthony Finch, Mitchell Punt, Bradley Freund and Lewis Taylor won the national championships earlier this month and walked away with the fair play award for their sporting conduct during one of the earlier rounds of the competition in Woking.
Kent County Council’s area youth worker at the XC Youth Centre, Sat Chopra, said: “We are all so proud of the team for their win and for all their hard work and dedication, after coming to the youth centre for about four years.
“All the young men have excelled at being part of this and the many other teams they have been part of at the centre.
“It has helped them have more self-esteem and shown them what they can also achieve in their personal lives. They are a real inspiration.”
After winning the Kent tournament in Strood, the team went on to the South East regional finals in Woking beating teams from London, Surrey, Essex and Buckinghamshire.
They then qualified for the finals at the Powerleague Trafford Soccer Dome in Manchester.
They became champions after playing against teams from Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Surrey, Ireland and Wales.
The event was organised by Clubs for Young People which promotes the involvement, enjoyment and achievement of all young people.
