Youth club team scores a victory in na­tional con­test

WE ARE the cham­pi­ons!

That’s the proud boast of th­ese six lads from the XC Youth Cen­tre in Stan­hope Road, Ash­ford, who won the Clubs for Young Peo­ple na­tional tour­na­ment. Team “Ran­dom”, made up of cap­tain Dan Cor­nell, Dan Mor­ri­son, An­thony Finch, Mitchell Punt, Bradley Fre­und and Lewis Tay­lor won the na­tional cham­pi­onships ear­lier this month and walked away with the fair play award for their sport­ing con­duct dur­ing one of the ear­lier rounds of the com­pe­ti­tion in Wok­ing.

Kent County Coun­cil’s area youth worker at the XC Youth Cen­tre, Sat Chopra, said: “We are all so proud of the team for their win and for all their hard work and ded­i­ca­tion, af­ter com­ing to the youth cen­tre for about four years.

“All the young men have ex­celled at be­ing part of this and the many other teams they have been part of at the cen­tre.

“It has helped them have more self-es­teem and shown them what they can also achieve in their per­sonal lives. They are a real in­spi­ra­tion.”

Af­ter winning the Kent tour­na­ment in Strood, the team went on to the South East re­gional fi­nals in Wok­ing beat­ing teams from Lon­don, Sur­rey, Es­sex and Buck­ing­hamshire.

They then qual­i­fied for the fi­nals at the Pow­er­league Traf­ford Soc­cer Dome in Manch­ester.

They be­came cham­pi­ons af­ter play­ing against teams from Manch­ester, Liver­pool, Birm­ing­ham, Sur­rey, Ire­land and Wales.

The event was or­gan­ised by Clubs for Young Peo­ple which pro­motes the in­volve­ment, en­joy­ment and achieve­ment of all young peo­ple.
