A YOUNG woman was the victim of a serious sex attack as she walked through an alleyway on an Ashford housing estate.

Police say the woman, in her 20s, was subjected to a “serious sexual assault” as she walked through the alley on the Godinton Park estate shortly before 6.20pm on Tuesday

The attack happened on the footpath between Cypress Avenue and Springwood Close.

Police immediately responded to a 999 call from the victim, made at 6.21pm.

Officers rushed to the area and yesterday (Wednesday) the alleyway and a neighbouring park area that contains a children’s playground and teenage shelter off Springwood Drive remained cordoned off.

Police officers and Police Community Support Officers searched the area and spoke to residents.

Det Insp Trevor Fleming said; “I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault.”

Worried neighbours had seen officers at the scene shortly after the incident and were unclear about what had happened until details were confirmed the next morning.

Diane Smith, of Cypress Avenue, said: “When I got home that night at 7.30pm the police were already there, with two cars, and the areas were sealed off.

“The cordons have been there all night.

“We had no idea what had happened and at first there were rumours going around.”

Another woman, who wished to remain nameless, said: “Forensic officers were at the scene that evening.

“It’s worrying because this is a Neighbourhood Watch area and it is a really safe area.

It is a lovely area and it is so out of character for this sort of thing to happen.

“It’s horrible.”

Anybody with information on the attack should contact South Kent Police on 01303 289600 or call Kent Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
