Also playing were EastEnders actors Sam Attwater and Devon Anderson and X Factor finalist Daniel Pearce.

Organiser Gary Kirton said: “It was a fantastic day under the circumstances and it went very, very well. We were hoping that people would be able to walk around the stadium, but obviously because of the rain they were confined to the stands.

“We still managed to smash last year’s fundraising and although money is still coming in, I think we raised about £15,000 for Help for Heroes. The lads who came down were really good, so a big thanks to them.” The final score was 6-3 to the Ashford Town Celebrity side.

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Band played to the crowds through the rain as did the forces sweethearts Annie Shelton and Le’arna Ashleigh as the Swinging Sweethearts.

Inside, visitors were able to enjoy sumo suits and a bucking bronco as well as keeping the cold out at the bar. Music continued into the evening with Jo Steel as Kylie Minogue and the Counterfeit Quo playing.
