Payne’s Open victory
ALEX PAYNE won the Ashford Squash Open. He defeated Ken Gwam in a tough four-game final at the Stour Centre. Sixteen players took part, with the format of handicaps and point-a-rally scoring helping to create an exciting tournament. In the semi-finals, Payne beat Neil Williams 3-1, while Gwam saw off Paul Clifton 3-0. The final had both players starting on nought with 15 points required to win each game. Payne won the first 15-14 and Gwam the second by the same score before Payne took the next two games 15-9, 15-13. The first round losers’ competition was won by Simon Cooper, who beat Pat Breen in a five-game match.
