‘Dickie’ chalks up 50 years

ASH­FORD Town Bowl­ing Club’s longserv­ing mem­ber RJ ‘Dickie’ Houghton reached 50 years’ play­ing ser­vice for the club when he took part in their open­ing For­est of Blean men’s triples league game of the sea­son.

Houghton, who has also held sev­eral po­si­tions on the com­mit­tee, helped Ash­ford to a con­vinc­ing 109-86 win at Whit­stable.

The best rink per­for­mances came from John Ill­man, Bob Hur­ren and Jim Cox (skip) who won 22-10, while Peter Bal­son, Ivor Groves and Ge­orge Gibbs (skip) se­cured a 22-13 suc­cess.

Ash­ford had be­gun their sea­son with the tra­di­tional ‘open­ing drive’ fix­ture played be­tween the cap­tain’s and the pres­i­dent’s teams.

The match, which was played in su­perb weather, ended with a 76-67 vic­tory for the pres­i­dent’s team.

The fol­low­ing day, Ash­ford trav­elled to meet Kearsney BC at Dover.

The men’s team drew 116-116 with the best Ash­ford per­for­mance com­ing from the rink of Peter Bal­son, Ivor Groves, Peter Arnold and Peter Col­lett (skip) who recorded a 26-16 vic­tory.

Ash­ford won the ladies’ rink 24-21.
