‘Dickie’ chalks up 50 years
ASHFORD Town Bowling Club’s longserving member RJ ‘Dickie’ Houghton reached 50 years’ playing service for the club when he took part in their opening Forest of Blean men’s triples league game of the season.
Houghton, who has also held several positions on the committee, helped Ashford to a convincing 109-86 win at Whitstable.
The best rink performances came from John Illman, Bob Hurren and Jim Cox (skip) who won 22-10, while Peter Balson, Ivor Groves and George Gibbs (skip) secured a 22-13 success.
Ashford had begun their season with the traditional ‘opening drive’ fixture played between the captain’s and the president’s teams.
The match, which was played in superb weather, ended with a 76-67 victory for the president’s team.
The following day, Ashford travelled to meet Kearsney BC at Dover.
The men’s team drew 116-116 with the best Ashford performance coming from the rink of Peter Balson, Ivor Groves, Peter Arnold and Peter Collett (skip) who recorded a 26-16 victory.
Ashford won the ladies’ rink 24-21.
