Hard work vital

JOE DENLY admits hard work by him and the rest of the Kent team is vital if they want to turn around a low-key start to the new season. His inclusion in the latest England Performance squad shows selectors haven’t lost faith in the 24-year-old England one-day opener’s talents and had things gone better in the winter, Denly might well now have been swapping Canterbury for the Caribbean and the World Twenty20 Championships. Instead, he went into this week’s fourth LV County Championship match of the season against Warwickshire averaging less than 15, after scoring just 95 runs in six innings. He said: “It’s all areas we need to work on, especially myself. I got a couple of 30s, and an 80 in the one-day game but I still need to build on that. We have been disappointed with our first few performances and want to learn from the mistakes.”
