Man ac­cused of murder of mum-of-six faces court

THE man ac­cused of mur­der­ing Susie Smith in an al­ley­way in Ash­ford ap­peared at Maid­stone Crown Court last Thurs­day.

Steven Brooker, of Water­man House, God­frey Walk, spoke only to be iden­ti­fied and to ac­knowl­edge he un­der­stood the pro­ceed­ings at the brief hear­ing.

He is ac­cused of killing the 50-year-old mother-of-six, also known as Susie Beaney, on April 29.

The grand­mother-of-15 died in the Wil­liam Har­vey Hos­pi­tal af­ter be­ing found in the al­ley­way be­tween Christchurch Road and God­frey Walk soon af­ter 6.45pm.

The al­ley was was closed while the scene was ex­am­ined.

Friends and fam­ily have left flow­ers at the scene.

One from her chil­dren reads: “To mum, we love you and will miss you.

“Never thought it would end this way.

“Wish we could have had more laughs and years to­gether. We will al­ways be think­ing of you and you will al­ways be in our hearts.”

Brooker, 42, was re­manded in cus­tody un­til July 1, when he is due to en­ter a plea to the charge.

Judge Jeremy Carey set a pro­vi­sional trial date of Novem­ber 16.

An in­quest into Susie Smith’s death was due to be opened and ad­journed to­day (Thurs­day) at Ash­ford Mag­is­trates’ Court.
