Pensioners are trapped but safe
SPIRITED pensioner Fred Dawson gives the thumbs-up after escaping unhurt from a car crash.
Mr Dawson and his wife had a narrow escape when their car veered off the road and went into a ditch in a hair-raising accident.
The incident left the couple, who are in their late 80s, trapped in their car, which was tilted sideways in the muddy culvert at the side of the road.
The couple couldn’t open doors of the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters called to the scene.
A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The driver was in good spirits and actually gave firefighters his mobile phone to picture him giving them the thumbs-up.”
The accident happened 200 yards from St Rumwold’s Church on the B2067, Bonnington, just before 2.30pm on Tuesday, May 4.
The car had been left unstable when it came to rest and had dug into the bank.
The couple had to be taken out of the back of the car to safety after fire crews stabilised it with industrial airbags.
They were checked by an ambulance crew at the scene as a precaution.
