Bringing back the golden age of rail
YOU can definitely let the train take the strain when a new luxury rail company launches services from Ashford later this month.
Saturday, May 29, sees the first upmarket Amethyst Rail train leave Ashford for Bath and Bristol.
Amethyst is targeting the luxury days out market with Pullman first class coaches which it says offers passengers a ‘wow’ experience.
The first train will by pulled by the A1 Pacific steam locomotive Tornado, which will pick up passengers at various Kent stations before heading west.
Passengers will be welcomed aboard with a glass of Bucks Fizz, followed by a full English breakfast and prior to arrival at Bath and Bristol a light lunch will be served.
Travellers can then enjoy the day in either city before boarding the train for the return, during which a five-course silver service dinner will be served.
Amethyst Rail (www.amethystexperience.com) has been founded by Jim Hall, a senior railway industry figure, and Dave Wilsmore , who has spent over 30 years in the travel business.
Jim Hall said: “We want to offer luxury travel to people living out- side London. For years Kent’s passengers have had to put up with overpriced, overcrowded and slow trains on Britain’s Cinderella lines. We are bringing the golden age of glamorous travel back to the county.”
The train will depart from Ashford around 7am and pick up passengers at Headcorn, Paddock Wood, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Orpington, Bromley South and Kensington Olympia.
Fares for the trip are – first class including full dining £219; first class with light snacks £159 and standard class £99.
