Patch­ing shines but Hythe fall to de­feat

HYTHE’S Shep­herd Neame Kent Cricket League Di­vi­sion 1 cam­paign got off to a dis­ap­point­ing start with a 23-run de­feat to Whit­stable at the Grove on Satur­day.

The home side started well, re­duc­ing the vis­i­tors to 130-9 hav­ing won the toss and put them in in damp, over­cast con­di­tions. Dan Patch­ing was the pick of the bowlers, fin­ish­ing with 4-35 off 15 overs.

Young­ster Jamie Hem­phrey pro­vided am­ple sup­port, re­turn­ing re­mark­able fig­ures of 3-9, how­ever, the tide soon turned, as Whit­stable tailen­ders Josh Gould and Dun­can Hardy put on an un­de­feated 39 for the fi­nal wicket.

They took the mo­men­tum into their bowl­ing, with the seam­ers rip­ping out the Hythe top five for just 39 runs. James Wat­son (22) and Dan Patch­ing (41) pro­vided some re­sis­tance but, when Patch­ing fell with the score on 105, the game was up.

Hythe face a tough trip to ti­tle favourites Black­heath on Satur­day.

The 2nds’ Di­vi­sion 2 game against Cat­ford & Cyphers was aban­doned due to rain in­side 14 overs with Hythe on 57-0.
