Gar­den day aims to help fund grow

THE Friends of Smar­den Church are mak­ing fi­nal prepa­ra­tions for the vil­lage’s 15th open gar­den week­end.

The ma­jor an­nual fund rais­ing event is over the week­end of June 19 and 20, 1pm to 6pm each day, with eight gar­dens open to vis­i­tors.

Pro­grammes/tick­ets are £6 in ad­vance from Luck­hurst Butch­ers, the post of­fice and The Fly­ing Horse or £7 on the day and give full ad­mis­sion to all gar­dens.

Vin­tage cars (on the Satur­day) and clas­sic cars (on the Sun­day) will be dis­played at Gillets, in The Street, cour­tesy of Peter and Paddy Gar­rod.

The tower of St Michael the Ar­changel Church will open to of­fer views of the vil­lage and sur­round­ing area.

Vis­i­tors can also en­joy tea and cake on the lawns of the me­dieval Dragon House and Smar­den Char­ter Hall, with the lat­ter also host­ing a his­tory ex­hi­bi­tion.

All pro­ceeds will go to the church’s fab­ric fund.
