Vicar sent packing...as farewell gift funds trip
RETIRING clergyman Richard Love got the ultimate retirement present – thousands of pounds to fly out to visit his sisters in New Zealand.
The Rev Love has not seen them for 25 years and, thanks to a generous whip-round by parishioners, can now visit them with his wife Christine.
The Rev Love retired as priest in charge of Aldington, Bilsington, Bonnington and Lympne.
His bumper £3,600 cheque, raised by about 200 parishioners, was presented to him at Aldington village hall on Sunday.
Bonnington churchwarden Norman Corfield said: “Richard has spoken to his sisters over the phone but has not seen them in 25 years.
“We had a target of £2,000 to pay for the airline tickets for both Richard and Christine but we raised far more.
“Some of the parishioners gave very generous donations.”
The presentation for the Rev Love also included a piped tribute by parishioner Michael Lloyd.
