Davey gets new season off to a flying start
PETE DAVEY made a storming start to the veterans’ track season at Welwyn with a hat-trick of victories. He took the M35 200m in 24.0sec, added the high jump with 1.60m and led the 4x100m squad with Steve Arnold, Iain Presnell and Steve Langford to victory in 51.2. Ashford’s success continued in the M50 1,500m taken by Kevin Williams in 4mins 49.2sec and Mick Goodall won the high jump with 1.40m. Ashford continued their battle with Dartford at the top of the table, edging them out in the Canterbury meeting to trail overall by just half a point. Davey led the field home in the M35 400m with 56.1 and added the triple jump with a fine 11.10. Steve Langford claimed the M50 triple jump with 9.94, M60 athlete Mick Goodall stepped up an age group to win the M50 pole vault with 3.20 and Kevin Williams maintained his grip on the distance events winning the M50 3,000m in 10.17.2 while Les Wood led the way in the M60 triple jump. In the second National Junior League at Dartford, Samantha Beckett achieved an excellent pb of 12.8 in the 100m, finishing third, and set another of 26.6 in the 200m. Lucy Holmes took second places in the shot and long jump, Rachel Hanagan posted good performances in the 400m, long jump and javelin, for two seconds and a third, while Amelia Jones was third in the 1,500m. In the 100m hurdles, Caroline Hatley took second as well as a second in the shot while Tom Chambers equalled his pb in the 100m with 11.7.
