Davey gets new sea­son off to a fly­ing start

PETE DAVEY made a storm­ing start to the vet­er­ans’ track sea­son at Wel­wyn with a hat-trick of vic­to­ries. He took the M35 200m in 24.0sec, added the high jump with 1.60m and led the 4x100m squad with Steve Arnold, Iain Presnell and Steve Lang­ford to vic­tory in 51.2. Ash­ford’s suc­cess con­tin­ued in the M50 1,500m taken by Kevin Wil­liams in 4mins 49.2sec and Mick Goodall won the high jump with 1.40m. Ash­ford con­tin­ued their bat­tle with Dart­ford at the top of the ta­ble, edg­ing them out in the Can­ter­bury meet­ing to trail over­all by just half a point. Davey led the field home in the M35 400m with 56.1 and added the triple jump with a fine 11.10. Steve Lang­ford claimed the M50 triple jump with 9.94, M60 ath­lete Mick Goodall stepped up an age group to win the M50 pole vault with 3.20 and Kevin Wil­liams main­tained his grip on the dis­tance events win­ning the M50 3,000m in 10.17.2 while Les Wood led the way in the M60 triple jump. In the sec­ond Na­tional Ju­nior League at Dart­ford, Sa­man­tha Beck­ett achieved an ex­cel­lent pb of 12.8 in the 100m, fin­ish­ing third, and set an­other of 26.6 in the 200m. Lucy Holmes took sec­ond places in the shot and long jump, Rachel Hana­gan posted good per­for­mances in the 400m, long jump and javelin, for two sec­onds and a third, while Amelia Jones was third in the 1,500m. In the 100m hur­dles, Caro­line Hat­ley took sec­ond as well as a sec­ond in the shot while Tom Cham­bers equalled his pb in the 100m with 11.7.
