Tri­al­lists will get chance

SIMON WIL­LIS says he will con­tinue to give tri­al­lists their chance in the Sec­ond Xl this sea­son. Two young­sters, Ox­ford Uni­ver­sity left han­der Ed Young and for­mer Durham Academy bats­man Andy Smith, have both scored hun­dreds this month Chris Murtagh (Sur­rey), Mark Nel­son (Northants) and Mark Law­son (York­shire), all re­leased by their coun­ties, have also been in­cluded, while Young and Smith could get fur­ther chances to im­press. Wil­lis said: “I watched Ed play for Ox­ford against Cam­bridge a fort­night ago and he per­formed well. We gave him an op­por­tu­nity, and he played well against Glouces­ter­shire in the one-day Tro­phy, scor­ing an un­beaten 125. “Andy was rec­om­mended by for­mer Sus­sex and Durham wick­et­keeper Martin Speight, and played some games last sea­son and im­pressed in the cham­pi­onship against Glouces­ter­shire.” Mean­while, Kent face Es­sex at Bil­ler­icay on Mon­day in a new Sec­ond Xl one-day com­pe­ti­tion.
