Swift response stops sawmill blaze spreading
Firefighters spent more than 10 hours tackling a large wood chipping fire at Shadoxhurst.
Two fire engines and a water unit were called to Orlestone Oak Sawmill at Nickley Wood Road at 1.50am on Sunday. Twenty tonnes of chippings were on fire.
Crews used a hose reel and rakes to tackle the blaze.
A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “There was no fire spread to the surrounding woodland. Crews were on scene for a considerable amount of time to ensure the remaining wood chippings were cooled to prevent reignition.”
Firefighters left the scene at 11.22am. No-one was hurt and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
