Residents gathered in Hastingleigh on Sunday to celebrate the opening of a new footpath which leads to the community playing fields.

The path was recently resurfaced after a £3,000 National Lottery grant and a members’ grant from Cllr Andrew Wickham were awarded to Elmsted and Hastingleigh Parish Councils, which shares responsibility for the path.

Before the renovation of the footpath, which leads from Boundary Lane, The Street, to the recreation ground, it was almost impossible for wheelchairs and buggies to get to the field due to the mud and uneven surface.

Tracey Block, the clerk to Brook Parish Council, said: “The recreation ground is used as a football field, basketball court and a picnic area. With the help of the grant the lane has been renovated and is now perfect.”
