Big increase in homelessness
Ashford Borough Council has had to deal with more issues with homelessness because of the economic climate.
The authority has seen a 77% increase in people approaching them for housing advice in the last year and there has been a 20% increase in people being evicted from privately-rented properties.
Measures put in place to deal with this include a leasing scheme, the creation of the council’s own social lettings agency and a deposit bond scheme, enabling people to access the private sector without having to pay a large deposit up front.
ABC has proposed creating two new jobs for one year, with officers working with landlords to mitigate against eviction and helping tenants access the bond scheme.
