A theatre would be better than another cinema
We revealed last week plans for a new cinema in Ashford town centre. A selection of your letters and online responses is below: I don’t think there is a need for an in-town and out-of-town cinema in Ashford, despite the large population.
I do think the council should be moving forward with a plan to redevelop the Park Mall Centre which looks dated, is full of empty shops and would look much better with a town centre supermarket to serve those that cannot access the out-of-town superstores in Ashford due to no car or poor public transport.
A community theatre would have been better. It won’t be the Marlowe which is excellent and renowned thoughout Kent but it would be an improvement on no theatre.
I also think a new further educational college would be better. As for shops, there is no more demand for shops in Ashford. HMV, Primark will not come to Ashford because they are now represented or soon will be in Canterbury.
Ashford has three town centres which makes shopping there pretty bad. The designer outlet, the traditional town centre and the leisure park all in three different places, plus John Lewis at Home and Waitrose.
The town centre problem for retailers is inaccessibility compared to Canterbury, which is more compact and historical. GabriellaC
What a funny old town; people complain when leisure facilities are developed out of town and then complain when they are developed in the town centre where they are desperately needed.
This is a positive step towards getting an increased footfall back into Ashford; without this footfall you don’t get new business.
Shops like HMV and Primark won’t just ‘set-up’ in a town. There has to be a business case, and without any real attractions in the centre of town
I’ll be honest, if I want to shop I go to Bluewater or Lakeside, it costs £2 for the bridge but parking is free, unlike County Square, and I can shop late into the evening. I know it’s people like me who are killing the town centre but the town centre currently offers me nothing! A lousy cinema won’t coax me back. Obsy
So ABC think adding ANOTHER cinema to Ashford, which already has a 12-screen one, is an excellent idea? A theatre would have been the most sensible idea and would still bring people into the town centre. Joanne
Why do we need another cinema in Ashford? I cannot say how many people use the Eureka Park cinema in the evening/night but in the afternoon it’s not that busy. The space could be used for a much-needed theatre along the lines of the Marlowe. Linda Winder
