Plenty to enjoy
Derek Pestridge says Ashford United’s success this season is having a positive effect on the club’s profile.
The Homelands chairman – owner of United’s shirt sponsors D&D Autos – has enjoyed watching the re-formed club motor into pole position in the Southern Counties East League in their first season back following promotion from the Kent Invicta League.
He said: “We are sustaining good gates, and creating plenty of interest on social media including Facebook, which has helped generate a couple of sponsorship opportunities from local businesses recently, making December a good month.
“The FA Vase run has been good but it’s the league games against the likes of Tunbridge Wells, Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports, which are going to be key matches in the second half of the season as things develop.
“The club doing well can only be good for the town and the only disappointment has been the lack of football due to the weather.”
Mr Pestridge, who was appointed club chairman after a reshuffle last September, added: “I have been asked to continue (following Don Crosbie’s return to the club) and am more than happy to do so.
“I am 50% supporter, watching games with my wife and family and 50% chairman, enjoying putting on a shirt and club tie and meeting officials from opposition clubs.”
Three Charlton players – goalkeepers Ben Hamer and Nicky Pope and defender Cedric Evina – are guests of the East Kent Addicks at their first meeting of the New Year.
The trio will hold a question and answer session at The Kennington in Ulley Road next Thursday, January 9, (7.30pm).
