Di­lap­i­dated block stripped

Work­men have be­gun strip­ping out the in­te­rior of a block of derelict flats in Ash­ford town cen­tre this week ready for their de­mo­li­tion.

Con­trac­tors for Affin­ity Sut­ton have be­gun clear­ing out Ash­down Court in North Street, with new af­ford­able hous­ing set to be built on the site once it is cleared.

Affin­ity’s re­gional de­vel­op­ment di­rec­tor Joyce Fer­gu­son said: “We are re­ally pleased to be start­ing work on site at Ash­down Court and are de­lighted to be de­liv­er­ing much needed new af­ford­able hous­ing for the area.”

The di­lap­i­dated build­ing, which has been com­pared to a prison block and was plagued by crime and anti-so­cial be­hav­iour, will be knocked down and re­placed with 27 new af­ford­able homes, com­pris­ing two three-bed­room houses, 20 two-bed­room apart­ments and five one-bed­room apart­ments, with as­so­ci­ated park­ing and bi­cy­cle stor­age.

Work is ex­pected to be com­pleted by spring 2015.
