Coach Laslett wary of Kent rivals
Danny Laslett is adopting a cautious approach ahead of Ashford’s Kent Sussex Regional 1 home game against Kent rivals Gore Court on Saturday (1pm). The Ball Lane head coach saw his team hit nine without reply past lowly Worthing last weekend in their first game back following the midseason break but he expects the Sittingbourne club to be a tougher challenge this weekend. Laslett said: “We drew 2-2 against them earlier this season but were two down with only six minutes left. We have to be wary of them because they have improved since then.” He added: “We played pretty well at Worthing but it wasn’t a near perfect display. They are second from bottom and weren’t great but all credit to them for attacking us really high in the opening five or 10 minutes. “We then started to break them up, scoring three times in the opening quarter of an hour, allowing us to relax which is key to how we play.” The victory leaves Ashford joint second with Old Bordenians, three points behind leaders Tunbridge Wells but boasting a superior goal difference. Laslett said: “We like being in the chasing group but there is still a long way to go.” Former skipper Toby Clifton-Holt is again sidelined by a recurrence of back trouble but the club hope he returns before the end of the season.
