Big field set to start road race
Another big field is set to line-up in this year’s Ashford and District 10k road race on Sunday.
More than 600 had signed up by yesterday (Wednesday) for the 25th running of the event, now regarded as one of the most popular on the South East racing calendar.
Entries are also being taken on the day, likely to push the total beyond 700 with a limit of 1,000. Last year’s winner Ashford AC’s Robert Latala seems unlikely to be back to defend his title but club-mate Matt Britton, third 12 months ago, will be running.
Also taking part will be Ashford AC’s Declan Burton, whose eighth-place finish in the under-17 race at the Kent Cross-Country Championships at Brockhill Park, Hythe, on January 4, earned him a county call-up for the National InterCounties Championships in March. The club’s road running team manager Matt Hogben will also be among the starters.
Liz Weeks of Sittingbourne Striders won the ladies’ race last year, ahead of Rona Loubser (Folkestone).
Sandyacres Sports Club will again be the race headquarters, with the course taking the runners in a loop to Westwell and back. The race starts at 11am.
