A learner driver smashed into a parked ambulance while trying to move out of the way of a police car near a busy junction.

The crash happened in Canterbury Road at 3.30pm on Thursday when police officers and paramedics were dealing with concerns over a resident in one of the houses.

The car belonged to Trevor Bunn who runs Berties Biz driving school.

He said: “An emergency services vehicle was coming up behind us and the student panicked. I didn’t have time to do anything. Thankfully nobody was hurt.

“The car is driveable but I can’t open the passenger door so I can’t use it for teaching. It’s my only vehicle so I’m trying to get it back on the road as soon as possible.”

An ambulance, another paramedic vehicle and a police car had been called to a house about half an hour earlier and were all parked in Canterbury Road and Hardinge Road, causing queues as vehicles manoeuvred around them. An elderly woman was taken to the William Harvey Hospital after the initial calls – she was not involved in the crash.

Two fire engines also rushed to the road for what turned out to be a false alarm.
