Twenty-one new homes will be created in Ashford’s town centre.

Planning permission has been granted to transform Trafalgar House, in Elwick Road, from an office block into 21 flats.

The proposal, submitted by Anthony Property Company, sought to convert floors one, two and three of the four-storey building into 18 one-bedroom flats and three studio flats.

Each one-bedroom flat will consist of an open-plan kitchen and living room, double bedroom, bathroom and storage space.

Access to the building will remain the same, with an entrance hall from the ground floor.

No alterations are proposed for the ground floor level but

‘If each flat has a car, or two cars, let’s estimate 30 cars in total. Where are they going to park?’

an additional seven car parking spaces will be added to the building’s present 14.

The project was given prior approval by councillors from Ashford Borough Council’s planning committee.

Everyone on the committee apart from councillors Brendan Chilton (Lab), Bob Davidson (Lib Dem), Bernard Heyes (Con), Tina Heyes (Con) and Jim Wedgbury (Con) agreed on the application.

Cllr Chilton, ward member for Stanhope, said: “I voted against it because the conversion to dwellings provides no parking for residents.

“There will be 21 flats and, if you go on the assumption that each flat has a car, or two cars, let’s estimate 30 cars in total. Where are they going to park?”

Trafalgar House includes retail space on the ground floor and office accommodation on the first floor and above.

It is the home of Connexions Kent and Medway, an organisation which supports young people with career advice, and formally housed the Tiny Tots shop, which closed earlier this year.

All the retail units on the ground floor are vacant, as are the first and third floors.
