Funding of services must come first
I would like to respond to Stuart Barton’s column last week in regards to his criticism of Ashford Borough Council and the purchase of International House and surrounding areas.
Firstly, all councils in England are now able to raise funds (in essence run business portfolios) to (a) plug the funding gap created by the coalition’s austerity measures, and (b) to become more financially independent of central government funding as the funding levels are gradually reduced over the years.
With this in mind, ABC has no option but to ensure every business venture it undertakes is as profitable as humanly possible as it’s these profits that will replace funding from central government.
While everyone would like local charities to have as much office space as close to Ashford as humanly possible the funding of vital services must come first. And if
