Fund­ing of ser­vices must come first

I would like to re­spond to Stu­art Bar­ton’s col­umn last week in re­gards to his crit­i­cism of Ash­ford Bor­ough Coun­cil and the pur­chase of In­ter­na­tional House and sur­round­ing ar­eas.

Firstly, all coun­cils in Eng­land are now able to raise funds (in essence run busi­ness port­fo­lios) to (a) plug the fund­ing gap cre­ated by the coali­tion’s aus­ter­ity mea­sures, and (b) to be­come more fi­nan­cially in­de­pen­dent of cen­tral govern­ment fund­ing as the fund­ing lev­els are grad­u­ally re­duced over the years.

With this in mind, ABC has no op­tion but to en­sure ev­ery busi­ness ven­ture it un­der­takes is as prof­itable as hu­manly pos­si­ble as it’s these prof­its that will re­place fund­ing from cen­tral govern­ment.

While every­one would like lo­cal char­i­ties to have as much of­fice space as close to Ash­ford as hu­manly pos­si­ble the fund­ing of vi­tal ser­vices must come first. And if
