Cuckoos tracked by solar panel tags
Your correspondent Jean Foxon asks where are all the cuckoos hiding?
We have lost over half the breeding cuckoos in the UK over the last 25 years. To try to find the reasons, the British Trust for Ornithology has been satelite tracking cuckoos since 2011 to follow their migration routes and where they overwinter in Africa. To date, 31 male cuckoos have been fitted with recently developed solar powered 5gr tags and these have revealed different migration routes on their 10,000-mile round trip.
One cuckoo, Chris, has been tracked for three years of the project!
